Travelogue

Lazy Daze at Lake Anita campgroundLazy Daze at Lake Anita campgroundLake Anita State Park has come to be one of our stepping stones as we trek back and forth across the country—kind of a reliable and comfortable old friend. Situated just a short distance off I80 in western Iowa, Lake Anita is within 2 days striking distance from our home in New Jersey, so depending on our route, we usually spend a night here either on our way out West or on our return home. This time we hit it on our way home.

I don’t think we’ve every been able to have dinner here earlier than 9:00. Usually we arrive around 6:00 after a long day’s drive, and then take advantage of the lovely 5-mile trail around the lake to get some much needed exercise after a full day of just sitting.

One of the things I like best about Lake Anita is that unlike most state parks that we have been to, you can actually camp right on the lake and even swim in it if you choose. The beach is on the other side of the lake from the campground, but easily accessible by trail or a short drive. And the best part is, there are no fences or postings about no swimming without a lifeguard.

After an invigorating run and a refreshing shower, we sat back with a glass of wine and watched another terrific sunset over Lake Anita.
